Never Stop Being Awesome!
As a new teacher I was so excited to take all of my skills and put them to the test. My first year was amazing...and frustrating. I had come out of college humbled that I got a job right away while others didn’t and in the state I wanted to be in. What shocked me was the amount of barriers I had to overcome to use my new skills. I was locked into using district approved math, science, reading, writing, and social studies programs. There was little to no room for new ideas or what I was taught as new and best practices for our students.
Knowing that I would need to continue my education/learning to keep my teaching certificate I looked into places to get my master’s degree. My first goal was to get a degree from MSU, my lifetime favorite institute and family legacy. My next goal, was to continue learning about education and see what is current and best for my students and how to apply it or more importantly blend it with the district mandated programs. Lastly, I wanted a program that would allow me the most flexible situation possible as I was coaching and my wife and I were starting our family with our first child.
As I started class work I was a little concerned with the amount of work needed and that I wasn’t really sure if this was the right program for me. I wanted to get more out of the classes/program than just a degree. So I spoke with my advisor and he helped guide me into some options that would allow me to have more focus and interests involved.
Feeling renewed and excited I now was going to have a focus in online and technology based learning and coaching. This was what I needed to feel some stronger connection. I started to use the exciting tools I was learning and being trained on from MSU in my classroom as a teacher. I was getting great results of excitement from my students. They were wanting to do the lessons and asking for more. This when I had a change in philosophy as a teacher.
As a student getting ready for teaching I had such great professors and classmates and we created amazing and fun lessons. When I got to my first job and had little opportunity to use them I was sad. Now it took the change in my learning at MSU (feeling connected to my classes, being more interested) to find ways to make the teaching and learning for my students connected to them and interesting for them.
Since then my goals have remained; learn ways to make the best skills of learning interesting and finds ways to connect my students to the lessons, use the tools I have learned and integrate them into my district approved programs, offer the new skills to my peers and administration, and students ‘n’ staff “Never Stop Being Awesome!”
